Governor Jack Markell’s Weekly Message
Governor Jack Markell (D) discusses the executive order he signed this week dealing with regulatory reform in Delaware. The order directs all executive branch agencies to examine regulations on the books for more three years or more in an effort to identify any that outdated, ineffective and redundant.
“Some regulations are very important. They allow us to drink clean water and breathe clean air. Those are critical” said Gov. Markell. “But we want to know when regulations aren’t working, when they’re intrusive, when they’re slowing things down.”
As part of the process, each agency is required to hold at least one public forum in each county and accept written comments and suggestions before completing their evaluation.

Improving the economic climate in Delaware requires that all of us work together – private sector, all levels of government, community organizations, even academia.
I was recently joined in my Dover office by legislators from both parties and from both the House and the Senate. We were also joined by the National Federation of Independent Businesses to unveil an Executive Order on regulatory reform.
Over the next year, each of our agencies that have any kind of regulations will be hosting public meetings in each county so that members of the public and businesses can come in and tell us which regulations are not working for them. Of course, some regulations are very important, they allow us to drink clean water and breathe clean air. Those are critical. But we want to know when regulations aren’t working – when they’re intrusive, when they’re slowing things down. By taking this information in from the public and getting their perspective, it will allow us to take a hard look at what’s working, what’s not working and what we ought to change.
In the end, we all have the same objective – we want to make the economic climate in Delaware as best as it can possibly be. And by working together, we’ll help Delaware keep moving forward.
